Built for the Complexity of Campus
Universities manage millions of square feet across dozens of buildings — classrooms, libraries, dining halls, research spaces, and more. Occuspace gives campus facilities teams the real-time occupancy data they need to optimize every space, reduce energy costs, and plan smarter, without ever compromising student privacy.
The Higher Ed Difference
Universities Have Unique Space Management Challenges
No other institution type manages as many diverse space types, across as many buildings, for as many different users — students, faculty, staff, and the public — all with competing priorities and a deep obligation to privacy.
Diverse Space Types
Classrooms, lecture halls, labs, libraries, study rooms, dining halls, faculty offices, recreational facilities — each with different utilization patterns and planning needs.
Semester Seasonality
Campus utilization swings dramatically between academic terms, exam periods, summer sessions, and breaks — requiring flexible, continuous measurement rather than point-in-time surveys.
Energy Compliance Pressure
Universities face increasing pressure — and in some cases mandates — to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. Empty buildings can't be heated, cooled, and lit as if they were full.
Student Privacy Obligations
FERPA and institutional policy create strict obligations around student data. Any occupancy monitoring solution must be provably anonymous — not just claimed to be.
Across Your Entire Campus
From Lecture Halls to Long-Range Plans
Classroom & Lecture Hall Optimization
Stop Wasting Energy on Empty Classrooms
Large lecture halls are routinely booked for classes with far fewer students than capacity allows. The result is wasted energy, inflated maintenance costs, and space scheduling decisions that don't reflect actual academic need.

Occuspace shows actual attendance vs. room capacity — by class, by day, by semester — so registrars and facilities teams can match room assignments to reality.
Compare booked capacity to actual attendance automatically
Identify chronically under-occupied classrooms for repurposing
Support registrar room assignment decisions with data
Connect to BMS for occupancy-driven HVAC control
Libraries & Student Commons
Design Study Spaces Students Actually Want
Libraries and student commons are among the most heavily used — and most frequently renovated — spaces on campus. Occuspace tells you exactly which study areas are overcrowded, which go unused, and what hours demand spikes, so you can make renovation and resource investments that actually serve students.
Identify peak study demand by hour and day of week
Understand dwell time patterns to inform seating design
Right-size staffing and hours of operation to actual demand
Drive live availability displays for student wayfinding
Faculty, Grad & Research Spaces
Allocate Scarce Office Space Fairly
Faculty offices, graduate student workspaces, and research labs are perennially scarce on most campuses. Allocation decisions are often driven by seniority or departmental politics rather than actual use. Occuspace provides the utilization data to make those decisions equitably and defensibly.
Measure actual use frequency and duration per space
Identify underutilized offices for reallocation or sharing
Support equitable grad student workspace allocation
Document usage patterns for space planning committees
Your Students' Trust, Protected
Occupancy Intelligence Without Surveillance
Students, faculty, and staff trust their university to protect their privacy. Occuspace was designed from the ground up to deliver occupancy intelligence without ever collecting, transmitting, or storing personal data.
No Cameras
Occuspace sensors use passive BLE/Wi-Fi scanning or mmWave radar. There are no images, no video feeds, and no visual data of any kind to collect, store, or potentially expose.
No Personal Identification
MAC addresses are hashed immediately on-device before any data is transmitted. No person can be identified, tracked, or linked to their location. The data tells you how many people are in a space — never who they are.
FERPA-Aligned Architecture
Because no personally identifiable information is collected, Occuspace's data does not fall within the scope of FERPA student record protections — eliminating the need for consent workflows, privacy impact assessments, or additional legal review.

Sustainability & Energy
Campuses That Meet Their Energy Mandates
University buildings are among the largest energy consumers in higher education's operating budget. Many campuses face regulatory pressure, trustee mandates, or student activism around sustainability — and they need measurable progress, not aspirational goals.

Occuspace integrates with building management systems to enable occupancy-driven HVAC and lighting — reducing energy consumption in unoccupied spaces automatically, without relying on manual override or fixed schedules.
Document energy savings for sustainability commitments
Support carbon emission reduction mandates
Qualify for utility provider incentive programs
Report measurable sustainability outcomes to stakeholders
